Thomas Ray Boarman

Leonardtown, MD — A Mechanicsville man who got drunk, got into his truck and proceeded to wreak havoc on several St. Maryโ€™s County roads has been sentenced to 18 months in jail. St. Maryโ€™s County Circuit Court Judge Michael Stamm on November 17 sentenced Thomas Boarman, 26, to a total of four years in jail but suspended all but 18 months. The sentencing was on Boarmanโ€™s birthday.

According to police reports, Boarman on August 16th got into his 1988 Ford F-150 pickup truck after having consumed a large amount of alcohol, had multiple hit and run accidents along Thompson’s Corner Road, sideswiped numerous mailboxes and finally caused a three-vehicle accident on All Faith Church Road. Boarman and a driver of one of the cars had to be flown out to the Shock Trauma Center.

Police were not able to administer a blood/alcohol test on Boarman before he was flown out but four hours later at the hospital they still smelled a strong odor of alcohol on him and he blew a .19.

In court documents several of the victims of Boarmanโ€™s mayhem wrote about how scared they were during the ordeal. One of the drivers involved in the accident said, โ€˜I didnโ€™t know the driver of the truck was drunk. I though he hit me from behind intentionally. I have never been more fearful in my life.โ€

In statements to police Boarman said he blacked out several times. โ€œI deeply regret this and I am thankful no one was killed.โ€

Boarmanโ€™s attorney Shane Mattingly said that his client had an alcohol and โ€œoxyโ€ problem and that he had gone off his medication prior to the incident. โ€œBut for the grace of God we are not here with a vehicle homicide case,โ€ Mattingly said.

Boarman on August 15th pled guilty to two counts of an 11-count indictment: Causing Life-Threatening Injury by Vehicle while Under the Influence of Alcohol and Failure to Immediately Stop Vehicle at Scene of an Accident

In imposing the 18-month sentence Judge Stamm said he would not authorize work release but did authorize substance abuse treatment.
