Piney Point, MD – One of The BayNet’s alert readers, Bryan Swann, spotted a rare visitor swimming in the Potomac River near the pier at his parents’ house in Piney Point. The swimmer is a manatee, a marine mammal also referred to as a sea cow.
“Pretty wild, I’ve never seen one in this area,” said Swann, who took several pictures of the manatee.
The manatee is herbivorous and have been known to often travel alone. A very large number inhabit the waterways surrounding Florida. However, a manatee sighting in the Chesapeake Bay or one of its tributaries, while rare, is not unprecedented. The creatures have been spotted as far north as Cape Cod.
