Piney Point, MD – One of The BayNetโ€™s alert readers, Bryan Swann, spotted a rare visitor swimming in the Potomac River near the pier at his parentsโ€™ house in Piney Point. The swimmer is a manatee, a marine mammal also referred to as a sea cow.

โ€œPretty wild, Iโ€™ve never seen one in this area,โ€ said Swann, who took several pictures of the manatee.

The manatee is herbivorous and have been known to often travel alone. A very large number inhabit the waterways surrounding Florida. However, a manatee sighting in the Chesapeake Bay or one of its tributaries, while rare, is not unprecedented. The creatures have been spotted as far north as Cape Cod.
