Herbert E. Knott

Lexington Park, MD— On July 1, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Deputy McClure responded to Ritz Drive in Lexington Park for a reported domestic assault.

When McClure arrived on the scene, he made contact with the victim, who advised the defendant grabbed her wrist and pushed her to the ground.

The defendant was identified as Herbert E. Knott, 45 of Nanjemoy. The victim stated Knott approached her from behind. Once she was on the ground Knott stood over her with a raised fist, and she thought he was going to strike her.

According to charging documents, “Knott then fled the scene.” McClure observed several red abrasions on the victim’s chest and wrist. After the police had left the scene, Knott returned to the residence and walked in through an unlocked front door.

Knott proceeded to gather several of his belongings and placed them into a black garbage bag. The victim called the police again. However, Knott fled the area before police arrived.

Knott then returned to the victim’s residence a third time while the victim was inside. The front door was locked and Knott kicked the door open.

When the door was kicked, the victim, “used pepper spray against Knott and she exited through a side door of the residence.”

The victim, who indicated she was in fear of being assaulted again, ran to a neighbor’s house. Knott exited the home and ran in an unknown direction.

Knott was apprehended on Esquire Court, in Lexington Park, one street down from the victim’s residence. Knott was arrested and transported to the St.Mary’s County Detention Center, where he was charged with home invasion, fourth-degree burglary, second-degree assault and nine counts of failing to comply with a protective order.

Knott has a tentative preliminary hearing scheduled for July 28 in District Court. Knott faces a maximum jail sentence of 40 years and 90 days and/or a maximum fine of $11,500.
