Sunderland, MD – A Calvert County man sustained burns when he tried to extinguish the fire that subsequently damaged his home, state investigators reported. According to the Maryland Fire Marshalโ€™s Office, the blaze occurred Wednesday morning, Nov. 23 at a one-and-a-half story wood-framed, single-family dwelling on Greenvalley Drive in Sunderland.

โ€œThe fire was determined to have spread from a burning pile of debris outside the house to the deck and then to the house,โ€ a deputy fire marshalโ€™s report stated. โ€œThe homeowner received nonlife-threatening burns to his upper body as he tried to extinguish the fire and retrieve his pets. He was transported to Medstar Washington Hospital Center where he is being treated. Family members and the American Red Cross are assisting the homeowner.โ€

The deputy fire marshalโ€™s report identified the homeowner as David Turner.
Thirty-five firefighters responded to the one-alarm blaze around 7:30 a.m. The crews had the fire under control in 20 minutes. The estimated loss to the structure and contents is estimated at $315,000.ย
