Tapโs Community Brotherhood hosted its annual May Madness three-on-three basketball tournament May 8, 2010 at the St. Maryโs College of Maryland.ย This year, 29 teams participated and included, middle school, high school, menโs and co-ed divisions.
Basketball enthusiasts got into the game and showed off their skills in the tourney style competition. The TCBโs always exciting half-time show included a 50/50 raffle and Slam Dunk Competition, won this year by Justin Johnson, who received a $75 Best Buy gift card.
Division winners The Dunking Crew (Middle School) and Team Flight (9th/10th Grade) won scholarships to Coach Harneyโs Basketball camp, new basketballs and trophies. Team Takeover (11th/12th Grade), Team Dream (Adult Co-ed) and County Legacy (Menโs) all won $25 Foot Locker gift cards, new basketballs and trophies for their triumphs.
Kaci Kepferle, TCB Board member and sister of TCBโs inspiration, Pat Kepferle, explained that finding a date to hold the tournament this year was a challenge. The tournament this year was sandwiched between the โNaked May Dayย Bike and Run on the SMCM campus and Motherโs Day.
Kepferle said around 80 volunteers helped with event, about half of which came from Great Mills High Schoolโs Project Possible. TCB has supported the high school service-learning group for the past couple of years. Walden Sierra, the Maryland Dream basketball organization and The Bryant Dent Foundation were also on hand to share information.
The TCB brings together citizens, young and old, and of diverse backgrounds through their community events.ย The next will be their annual Back to School Picnic which offers a fun day for kids prior to the start of the school year and provides low income families with much-needed school supplies.
