In what were arguably two of the most hotly contested races since 1996, when Calvert County first started electing school board members, two newcomers notched victories in the General Election. In the Third Election District race for the Calvert County Board of Education, Kelly D. McConkey defeated incumbent Rose C. Crunkleton by 2,653 votes. In the First Election District, Joe R. Chenelly outpolled opponent Clifton Savoy by a margin of 3,274 votes. Chenelly becomes the fifth person to represent the district in the 16 years of elected school boards in Calvert. No incumbent from that district has ever sought reelection.

In the Second Election District, incumbent Tracy McGuire did not have an opponent on the ballot. She garnered 31,626 votes with unidentified write-ins receiving 225 votes.

The Third Election District race got off to a litigious start, with Crunkleton challenging McConkeyโ€™s residency in the district. A circuit court judge ruled that McConkeyโ€™s maintaining a residence at his business in Dunkirk qualified him to run in the Third District.

In addition to McGuire, McConkey and Chenelly will join BOE at-large incumbents Dawn Balinski and Dr. Eugene Karol.ย
