HANOVER, MD โ€“ Following the fire and road collapse on I-85 in Atlanta caused by highly flammable material stored under a bridge, the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) is proactively identifying and relocating any similar material stored under a state-owned bridge.

โ€œMDOT is doing everything we can to protect the safety of Marylanders as they use our road network to connect them to lifeโ€™s opportunities,โ€ said Transportation Secretary Pete K. Rahn.ย  โ€œWe are committed to taking every step possible to prevent what happened in Atlanta from happening here in Maryland.โ€

Beginning this week, MDOT deployed crews across the state to identify and remove any potentially flammable or combustible materials under Marylandโ€™s 2,564 state-owned bridges.ย  This effort is expected to continue for several weeks.
