HANOVER, MD โ Following the fire and road collapse on I-85 in Atlanta caused by highly flammable material stored under a bridge, the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) is proactively identifying and relocating any similar material stored under a state-owned bridge.
โMDOT is doing everything we can to protect the safety of Marylanders as they use our road network to connect them to lifeโs opportunities,โ said Transportation Secretary Pete K. Rahn.ย โWe are committed to taking every step possible to prevent what happened in Atlanta from happening here in Maryland.โ
Beginning this week, MDOT deployed crews across the state to identify and remove any potentially flammable or combustible materials under Marylandโs 2,564 state-owned bridges.ย This effort is expected to continue for several weeks.
