On a recent visit with TheBAYNET.com and Baynet Radio, Calvert County Sheriff, Mike Evans discussed his past eight years as sheriff, the upcoming election where he seeks his third term and what he intends to accomplish over the next four years.
โOver the past eight years, I have dedicated my efforts as sheriff to elevating the level of professionalism in both the rank and file and command officers in the agency,โ said Evans, โWe are better trained, more educated and more responsive than at any other time in the past.โ
Evans went on to explain that part of the effort to increase the officeโs professionalism lies in the dedication to training and education of the men and women that are there to protect and serve the citizens of Calvert County.
โWe have two deputies who have been trained at the Northwestern Traffic Safety School, one who has completed the FBI Academy and another attending this summer,โ said Evans.
When asked about his dedication to criminal investigation, Evans cited the creation of the Calvert Investigative Team โ composed of deputies and Maryland State Police officers who have demonstrated the highest level of work ethic and investigative skills. โWe have closed a lot of cases and work tirelessly to bring all open cases to a close.โ
He went on to state that as Sheriff, he is extremely proud of the accomplishments. โI assure every one in Calvert County that we will continue to serve the citizens and visitors in the most professional and responsible means available.โ Evans went on to state that the department is now much more responsive than it has ever been.
โWe needed to get more police presence in the neighborhoods, so we rearranged the shift schedule and patrol areas to ensure that was the case. And, with the addition of CompStat, we are better able to track the trends in criminal activity that at any time before.โ
Evans explained that CompStat is a statistical analysis system proven in many jurisdictions across the country to highlight criminal activity by not only type of crime, but down to the very street and/or neighborhood these crimes take place. The statistics help deputies and investigators focus their efforts where criminal activity is occurring.
โI have challenged my staff to continue to seek better and more efficient ways to handle law enforcement services. I push to seek enhanced technology to improve our services to the citizens and I am constantly looking for measures to ensure our law enforcement services are second to none,โ said Evans.
Evans is encouraged by the addition of officers in high schools and hopes to have all four high schools covered in the near future. โThese officers [in the schools] get to know the kids and whatโs going on. At the same time, they create an environment and image that teaches students that police officers are not just there to make arrests and put people in jail. They teach the kids that police are good, dedicated people who are there to help keep them stay safe; to help them have a place where they can learn and enjoy high school the way they should.โ
