Democratic candidate for State Delegate for Charles County โ District 28 stopped by Baynet Radio and TheBAYNET.com recently to discuss the areas of State governance he feels need addressing and his position on a number of issues.
The owner of Sign-A-Rama in Waldorf stated that he was running primarily because he enjoys helping people and getting involved in the community. โI feel that government leaders should be more involved with the people that have elected them,โ said Hickerson.
Hickerson talked about the current situation in Charles with respect to the economy and jobs. โWe need to get people back to work. There are a lot of people feeling pain right now. The under- and unemployed need all the help we can give them.โ
The first-time candidate stated that he has been involved in politics and government and that he stays as knowledgeable as he can about Marylandโs situation and all across the state, people need to get back to work and that the State needs to do more. โMaryland needs to work more closely with small and medium business to provide them the engine to grow. That growth fuels jobs and jobs will save our economy.โ
When asked about the homeless in Charles County, Hickerson said, โI feel that is primarily because businesses are struggling here and they arenโt able to keep people employed.โ
Hickerson said that in the short-term the state needs to implement a set of incentives for businesses to start hiring people again. โIt could be in the form of tax reductions and alleviating some of the regulatory burdens on businesses to help free up capital.โ
Hickerson feels that government needs to get more involved with the residents of the state. โThere is very little representation for businesses in Annapolis. We need to get more involved in the business community. It is small businesses that will save our economy. That is true all across the country. Small and medium businesses are the engine that drive our economy.โ
The candidate thinks that there should be a series of panel discussions and open forums where business owners can be heard and so that legislators can get feedback from the very people that are most responsible for growing the economy.
Hickerson also feels strongly that Charles County needs to do a better job at transportation. โTraffic in Charles is terrible and getting worse by the day. The way I see it is that sitting at stop lights is not a productive way to move people. Zero miles per gallon sitting in traffic is zero anyway you cut it โ bad for the environment and bad for productivity.โ
He stated that the county and state need to look seriously into a monorail option along the Rt. 301. โWe have a nice wide median all the way from the south up to the Branch Avenue metro station. A monorail system would not require digging tunnels and could be accomplished relatively fast and inexpensive.โ
