Green Party Candidate for US Senate, Natasha Pettigrew stopped by Baynet Radio and TheBAYNET.com recently to introduce her campaign and her stand on the issues in her battle to unseat incumbent Sen. Barbara Mikulski in the coming election.

โ€œI am a lifelong Marylander and it appears that our Federal Government has gotten away from the spirit of Abraham Lincoln’s immortal Gettysburg Address,โ€ said Pettigrew during the interview. โ€œI believe โ€˜Of the people, by the people, for the peopleโ€™ should always describe Government’s actions. Over the past few years, the actions of our elected officials do not reflect that great philosophy. I welcome the opportunity to return our great state to those simple but great words.โ€

When asked about her choice to run as a candidate with the Green party, Pettigrew stated, โ€œI chose to run as a Green Party candidate rather than as a Democrat or Republican because I felt the campaign I want to run most aligns itself with the Green Party’s 10 Key Values.โ€

The gregarious candidate went on to state that it is time Congress started working together for the common good of all and not for the benefit the few. โ€œWe can leave future generations a home to cherish, respect, and enjoy, but Americans need to be heard and listened to by their elected officials.โ€

Pettigrew continued, โ€œI actually am completely disgruntled with our elected officials. They no longer represent the people, they represent corporate America that is pulling their strings.โ€

Pettigrew went on to state as an example that when the Federal Government gave the banking industry over $700 billion, it was done despite vehement objections of the people. โ€œTo make matters worse, they did not inquire what was in it for their constituents. As a result, Americans have lost their jobs and homes by the millions and the banking industry has returned to profitability.โ€

She stated that she feels it would be impossible to repair the United States economy without listening to what the people want. โ€œNo one can achieve the common good without talking to the people. Without community dialogue, a few make important decisions for all based on their limited perspective of our needs.โ€

About the economy, Pettigrew offers a basic solution to begin the return to prosperity. โ€œTake unemployment, for instance,โ€ said Pettigrew. โ€œWe should encourage and support small businesses. That way, we can rebuild our economy from within communities, making us stronger locally and nationally.โ€

She feels strongly that renewable and sustainable energy sources are not only necessary to avoid ecological disasters such as the oil spill in the gulf, but will provide an excellent opportunity for the United States to once again become a leader in innovation.

The candidate stated that the United States has to improve the way it educates future generations. โ€œWe have some of the most intelligent people in the world in the United States. However, our educational system is failing students at all levels. Our high school dropout rate is unacceptable, no matter the ethnicity. There is no reason for our literacy levels to be less than 100 percent, but the problems do no stop once we have literate, high school graduates. We tell kids to stay in school and make sure they get a college education that is for all practical purposes impossible for many to afford.โ€
