A malfunctioning microwave oven sparked a house fire in Charles County Friday, Dec. 6, state investigators reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office, no one was injured in the blaze, which erupted around 4 p.m. at the house on Rock Point Road in Newburg. However, Dfm. Melissa Bean reported the family dog died as a result of the fire.

The one-story, single-family home sustained $40,000 damage.

Bean reported the blaze originated in the kitchen and was discovered by a passerby. Fifty-five firefighters from several Charles, Prince Georgeโ€™s and King George, VA volunteer companies were dispatched to the one-alarm blaze. Firefighters brought the flames under control in 10 minutes.

Bean said the occupants are being assisted by family and friends.
