Three shots sound within five minutes!ย  The alarm relays from plantation to plantation, summoning militia members to the Town Center.ย  This is not a real emergency but an imaginary test of the colonial emergency broadcasting system and your invitation to join the St. Maries Citty Militia at Historic St. Maryโ€™s City (HSMC) on Saturday, September 28, 2013.ย  Experience military drills and a glimpse of the homier comforts of camp life.ย

In early Maryland, able-bodied male colonists were required to arm themselves and be prepared to defend the colony against pirates, Virginians, and others intent on plundering.ย ย  Although the colonial militia of St. Maryโ€™s City fought few battles, members still needed to be trained and ready to do battle at a momentโ€™s notice.ย  A few times each year this citizen armed force would travel from far-flung plantations to muster and practice soldiersโ€™ skills together.ย  Families might accompany them–anxious for a day in town and a chance to socialize.ย ย ย

At the Militia Muster, visitors can stroll through militia encampments or visit sutlers (vendors) selling colonial wares.ย  Watch as unit members test their mastery of musketry. Let your nose lead you to demonstrations of camp cooking and call on militia families as they carry out daily tasks.ย  Try on colonial clothing and try your hand at a colonial game.ย  Sit a spell and enjoy a mini-drama at the State House. Attend The Salter Trial, and discover what happens to a 17th-century pig thief.ย  Participate in an English Civil War puppet show.ย  Practice drilling with a pike or musket blank and then march along with militia men preparing for a battle.ย  Expect smoke, fire, and pageantry when the militia comes to town!

Militia Muster activities will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.ย ย  Admission is $10.00 for adults; $9.00 for seniors; and $6.00 for students.ย  Those under five years and Friends of HSMC are always free.ย ย ย

After hours, join the St. Maries Citty Militia and Southern Maryland Traditional Music and Dance for Contra Dancing.ย  No experience with traditional folk dance is needed; all dances will be taught and accompanied by live music. Put on your dancing shoes, or sneakers, and join us at 7 p.m. on the State House green.ย  The dance is free but donations will be accepted.

Historic St. Maryโ€™s City is a museum of living history and archaeology on the site of Marylandโ€™s first capital.ย  For more information about this event, programs for adults and children, or the museum, call 1-800-SMC-1634, 240-895-4990, or visit www.stmaryscity.org.ย
