Sunderland, MD – On May 12 at approximately 3:03 p.m. deputies responded to Maryland Route 2 and Wayside Drive in Sunderland for a report of an accident involving three vehicles. The investigation revealed a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Mathew Austin Smith, 29 of Bushwood, was waiting to turn at Wayside Drive.ย  A 2013 Dodge Caravan, driven by Nicole Bland, 32 of Lusby, was travelling northbound in the same area when it struck the Cavalier and sent it into oncoming traffic. The Cavalier subsequently struck a Toyota Prius, driven by Rachel Broderick, 33 of Huntingtown. The Cavalier and the Prius both caught fire. The occupants of the vehicles were removed by unknown citizens. Smith was transported by helicopter for his injuries.ย ย ย 

The Dodge Caravan driven by Ms. Bland also had twin 6-month-old passengers in the vehicles. They were secured in car seats and uninjured. According to a court docket summary, Bland was charged with Driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired (DWI), negligent driving, DWI controlled dangerous substance, DWI alcohol, reckless driving and driver using hands to use handheld telephone while vehicle is in motion. Bland was transported to the Calvert County Detention Center. She was released on $10,000 bond and has a hearing scheduled for June 28 in District Court.ย ย

Sunderland, MD – Calvert County firefighters were dispatched to the scene of a serious motor vehicle crash in Sunderland Saturday, May 12 shortly after 3 p.m. According to Jonathan Riffe of the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department, the crash involving three vehicles occurred at the Route 2-Wayside Drive intersection. โ€œUnits arrived and found a three vehicle accident with two vehicles fully-involved,โ€ Riffe stated.

Crews extinguished the fire. One motorist sustained serious injuries and was flown to a regional burn center.

The crash remains under investigation and a police report is pending.
