Radio ad launched by clean water, healthy familiesย

calls on legislators to leave polluted runoff law intact

The Clean Water, Healthy Families coalition began playing a new 60-second radio ad today that highlights one of the important reasons advocates say local governments must reduce pollution from stormwater runoff – to keep iconic Maryland seafood safe. The ad will run in the Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington, D.C. markets. The ad’s script is below. Click here to listen to the ad.

The Clean, Water Healthy Families coalition says polluted runoff makes local waterways unsafe for swimming, threatens Maryland seafood and causes localized flooding and property damage. In 2012, the state legislature passed legislation that requires Maryland’s 10 largest jurisdictions to fund pollution-reducing projects to meet federal Clean Water Act requirements. Local governments assess fees on hard surfaces, with the proceeds paying for on-the-ground projects to reduce pollution by replacing failing infrastructure, restoring or enhancing stormwater management systems, and creating buffers and green space to filter runoff.

“We’ve got a game plan to clean up this pollution now,” said Dru Schmidt-Perkins, executive director of 1000 Friends of Maryland. “We can’t let election year politics threaten the progress we are making. We’re asking our legislators to keep the polluted runoff law intact and to keep the weed killer out of our crab cakes. This new ad will make sure the public is aware of what’s at stake if we roll back this important environmental protection and why we need this critical source of funds.”

60 second radio ad

SINGING:

Keep the weed killer out of my crab cakes

Motor oil out of my rockfish

Fertilizer out of my flounder

That’d make a hideous dish

TALKING:

We Marylanders love our seafood from the Bay. That’s one reason the Polluted Runoff law is so important.ย  Runoff brings all kinds of industrial chemicals, pesticides, and even dog poop into our waters where our crabs, fish and oysters live. The Polluted Runoff law will take proven and measurable steps to keep waters and our seafood healthier.

ย

SINGING:

So hey Maryland law makers,

Don’t gut the Polluted Runoff law

‘Cause nobody wants dog poop and fertilizer

With their crab cakes, beer and slaw
