ย
Football legend (former captain of NFLโs Oakland Raiders and 1987 Heisman Trophy Recipient) and 9-1-1 for Kidsยฎ International Chairman, Tim Brown, will recognize two local heroes on Thursday, March 31, 10:30 a.m., at the Lower Senate Park on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.ย The calm, decisive actions of Department of Emergency Services Public Safety Dispatcher I James Maloney, along with the quick-thinking of a brave seven-year-old Charles County student, Madison Davis, saved a life.
ย
On March 6, at their home in Waldorf, Sophia Davis experienced a medical emergency and Madison Davis called 9-1-1. Maloney took the call from Davis, quickly finding out important details and asking her if there was an adult in the home besides her mother. She stated she was alone with her mother because her father was โin the desertโ with the military. Maloney quickly dispatched medical personnel to Davisโ home.
ย
Upon arrival to Davisโ home, emergency responders found that Davis had secured her pets, unlocked the door, and gave a good history to medics. While her mother was being treated, she gathered her belongings, locked the door, gave police the keys, and told the officer where her babysitter lived. Because of Maloneyโs patience and assistance on the phone, and Davisโ ability to articulate to emergency personnel, Sophia Davis made a full recovery.
ย
โCharles County has hard-working, dedicated employees, and James is one shining example.ย His professionalism led to a life being saved.ย And young Madison demonstrated a maturity beyond that of most children her age.ย They are both heroes and are very deserving of this honor,โ stated Commissioner President Candice Quinn Kelly.
ย
For their actions on March 6, Davis and Maloney are being recognized by โ9-1-1 for Kids,โ a national organization based in California. Mr. Brown will serve as master of ceremonies, and will be joined by the Executive Director of E9-1-1 Institute, Greg Rhode; the Executive Director of the National Emergency Numbersย Association, Brian Fontes;ย and distinguished leaders from the National Education Association, the National 9-1-1 Education Coalition, and the NexGen 9-1-1 Caucus. Joining in the festivities will be officials from Charles County Government, Charles County Department of Emergency Services, and other 9-1-1 public safety officials, as well as local elementary schools and community-based youth organizations.ย The Charles County Commissioners will officially recognize Maloney and Davis for their heroic acts during a regular meeting session in April.ย

More than 240 million calls were received by 6,130 9-1-1 communication centers in the U.S. last year.ย Fifty-percent of those calls were not emergencies. The impact of those non-emergency calls not only costs hundreds of millions of dollars to respond to, but people with true emergencies were met with busy signals and were unable to summon help. With examples set by everyday heroes such as Davis and Maloney, educators can drive home important information concerning critical emergency preparedness and response procedures. Whether it is a medical emergency, a fire or a crime to report it is essential to teac
