The Optimist Club of Calvert Prince Frederick held its annual banquet honoring students deemed Calvert County’s “Outstanding Youth” as part of Optimist International’s “Youth Appreciation Week.”
This year the local club saluted 40 students—10 students each from Calvert County’s four public high schools—Monday, Nov. 18 at St. John Vianney Family Life Center in Prince Frederick.
The honorees are selected by the club with the aid of school guidance counselors. Selectors weigh academic achievement plus school and community activities.
The following are the 2013 honorees from Calvert High School (CHS).
Hannah M. Aris is a member of CHS’ Student Government, Broadcast Club and cross country team. Aris is a member of the All-County Orchestra. She plans to study biomedical engineering, earn a medical degree and continue to help people who are ailing or need aid.
Margaret A. Horstkamp is an Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar with Honor and a recipient of the Spanish Academic Award. Horstkamp in involved in a church youth group and the Calvert Humane Society. She plans to go to college and continue her community service along the way.
Jacob McCullum is a member of the National Technical Honor Society, the CHS Robotics Club and Rubik’s Cube Club. McCullum is a recipient of the Minds in Motion Award and captain of the cross country, indoor track and outdoor track teams. He plans to attend the University of Maryland, study aerospace engineering and work in the aerospace field.
Courtney L. Mattson is a member of the CHS Orchestra, Chemistry Club and an AP Scholar with Distinction. Mattson received AP Chemistry’s Outstanding Award and was first-team all-Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) Indoor Track. Future plans include earning a graduate degree and running track collegiately.
Brandon A. Pierce has been recognized for academic achievement in AP Chemistry, Calculus and Statistics and is captain of CHS’ varsity soccer team. Pierce has volunteered for Safe Nights and is involved with a church youth group. His future plan is to pursue a doctorate degree, become a physicist and to have his own company.
