La Plata, MD –ย A fire that heavily damaged a 116-year-old house in Charles County is under investigation, state authorities reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office, the blaze occurred Friday evening, July 1 on Port Tobacco Road in La Plata. The fire was discovered by a neighbor and reported at approximately 8:35 p.m.

โ€œThe origin and cause of the fire is currently under investigation,โ€ a July 5 fire marshalโ€™s report stated. โ€œThe home was built in 1900. The family dog was found deceased inside the home. The owner is being assisted by family and friends.โ€

Damage to the three-story, wood-framed house is estimated at $75,000. State officials identified the owner as Ronald Litten.

Forty-five firefighters responded to the one-alarm blaze and brought the flames under control in 15 minutes. No injuries were reported.
