La Plata, MD – A fire that heavily damaged a 116-year-old house in Charles County is under investigation, state authorities reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the blaze occurred Friday evening, July 1 on Port Tobacco Road in La Plata. The fire was discovered by a neighbor and reported at approximately 8:35 p.m.
“The origin and cause of the fire is currently under investigation,” a July 5 fire marshal’s report stated. “The home was built in 1900. The family dog was found deceased inside the home. The owner is being assisted by family and friends.”
Damage to the three-story, wood-framed house is estimated at $75,000. State officials identified the owner as Ronald Litten.
Forty-five firefighters responded to the one-alarm blaze and brought the flames under control in 15 minutes. No injuries were reported.
