Update
Court documents on file in Anne Arundel County confirm previous domestic violence incidents involving Frank Hayward Jr., the man Calvert County police believe killed his wife and 2-year-old daughter, and critically wounded his son, Frank III, 12; Tuesday, July 31 at the family’s home in the Fairview subdivision in Owings.
Calvert County Sheriff Mike Evans [R] also confirmed during a press briefing that an elderly woman who was in the residence at the time the incident occurred was not harmed. The sheriff would not confirm the cause of the deaths but stated several guns were found in the residence.
In 2007, Cynthia Hayward had filed for divorce in Anne Arundel County, court records revealed.
Frank Hayward III is reported in critical condition at Children’s Hospital.

Police have identified family members involved in a domestic incident at a residence on Candlelight Court in the Fairview subdivision of Owings this morning. Three people—including a two year-old female child—were found dead and a 12-year-old boy was found with serious injuries as a result of the incident which occurred Tuesday morning around 8:30 a.m.
Calvert County Sheriff Mike Evans [R] said the incident was reported by an anonymous 911 caller who was not inside the residence.
Members of the Sheriff’s Office’s Special Operations Team entered the residence, which was engulfed in flames.
The deceased were identified as Frank Hayward Jr., 32; Cynthia Hayward, 31; and Natalee Hayward, 2. Found suffering from lacerations to the neck and burns was Frank Hayward III, 12, who was flown to a Washington, DC area hospital.
Evans said investigators believe Frank Hayward Jr. killed his wife and daughter and injured his son before taking his own life. The sheriff said a handgun was found inside the house. The bodies of the deceased were all found on the first floor.
According to Evans, police had been dispatched once to the home back in May in response to an anonymous “check welfare” call. Otherwise, Evans indicated police have found no prior record of domestic violence involving the Hayward family.
