On Saturday, September 29, 2012, the Calvert County Sheriffโ€™s Office and Maryland State Police Barrack U participated in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) sponsored Prescription Drug National Take Back Day.

Once again, the Calvert County Department of Parks and Recreation hosted three collection sites at the Mount Hope, Northeast, and Southern Community Centers for citizens to drop off unused, expired, or unwanted prescription medications. ย

Thanks to pre-event advertising and public awareness efforts conducted by the Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse (CAASA) through the Prescription Drug Abuse Abatement Committee (PDAAC), the day was a success. ย Large quantities of prescription medications were collected at the community centers, Sheriffโ€™s Office, Barrack U, and Asbury Retirement Community.

โ€œPrescription drug abuse is a national problem, and Calvert County is experiencing itsโ€™ share of it. ย As a community, we are working together to overcome prescription drug abuse and its related effects. Through events like the National Take Back Day, the 24-hour drop box at the Sheriffโ€™s Office, and the efforts of PDAAC, we are making a difference, and will not stop until we have overcome this problem.โ€- Sheriff Mike Evans.
