Dear Editor: November 2nd is an important election for the St. Mary’s County Board of Commissioners. A majority of the five members will be new to the Board, since two current members were term-limited, and one lost his primary. I believe, therefore, it is vitally important to elect people to the Board who have a long distinguished record of public service. One such person is MARY WASHINGTON. I have known Mary for over 20 years as a neighbor, a friend, and as a dedicated public servant who cares deeply about the children in our community. She has worked diligently at the low-paying job of School Board Member for the last 14 years. She has spent a great deal of time visiting classrooms throughout the county. Her experience on the five-member School Board will serve her well on the five-member Commissioner Board. Mary has been a member of a School Board that is responsible for operating St. Mary’s County Public Schools, the second-largest employer in the county, with over 2,200 employees, over 17,000 students, and with a budget of $200,000,000. Mary has been fiscally responsible in spending our public education dollars, in order to keep down our tax rates. Mary has worked hard to help St. Mary’s County become an excellent school system, and to help the State of Maryland become the number one school system in the nation, as ranked by U.S. Education Week Magazine. Let’s keep a dedicated public servant working for the citizens of St. Mary’s County by electing MARY WASHINGTON County Commissioner on November 2nd. If you can’t make it to the polls on November 2nd, you can vote early at the Leonardtown Governmental Center starting October 22nd through October 28th, from 10 A.M. until 8 P.M.
