Six regional businesses were recognized at the 12th Annual Leading Edge Awards at the Jaycees Center in Waldorf on Wednesday night. The awards ceremony was put together by the Corporate Center at College of Southern Maryland.
 
MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital won an award from the CSM Partnership in Education for their cooperation with the college. MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital has been a staple in the St. Mary’s County community since 1912. They actively partner with the College of Southern Maryland for their athletic and wellness programs as well as partner with their healthcare programs. They also partner in education by utilizing CSM’s resources to offer their employees workforce development opportunities. The award was presented to Medstar St. Mary’s Hospital by the College of Southern Maryland Foundation.
 
Calvert Systems Engineering, Inc. was named the Calvert County Business of the Year by the Calvert County Department of Economic Development. Calvert Systems Engineering, Inc. is an engineering and consulting service firm that provides software and systems engineering.
 
William Childs, IV, President and CEO of Chaney Enterprises was named CEO of the Year by The Corporate Center at CSM. When accepting the award, Childs spoke about the recession, saying Chaney Enterprises only cut seven percent of its workforce, cuts that have since been recuperated, while most businesses have cut 25-30 percent of their workforce. Childs said 31 jobs have been created since the beginning of 2011, and that the average Chaney worker has a higher income than the average American worker. He said that it’s the employees and the service a company provides that makes a successful business. Chaney, a heavy construction equipment sales company, is celebrating its golden anniversary.
 
The Charles County Public Library system was named the Charles County Technology Company of the Year, with the award presented by the Charles County Technology Council. The public library system has taken a leading role in the implementation of technology, most recently with implementing a system for book rentals on Kindle and other e-reader and tablet devices. The new Waldorf West branch opens in October in St. Charles.
 
The Small Business Development Center awarded Brian Keesee, president of Crown Trophy of Waldorf and co-owner of Pothole Pros, the Small Business of the Year. Pothole Pros utilizes new technology to perform asphalt repairs. He utilized the Small Business Development Center for insight and assistance in order to obtain start-up funding.
 
Sabre Systems, Inc. was awarded The Patuxent Partnership Member Firm of the Year. Sabre Systems provides state-of-the-art technology, scientific and management solutions to globally dispersed government and commercial enterprises. Sabre is large enough to provide logistics, technical and software development support but small enough to remain flexible. The company als
