Barstow, MD ย –ย Energetic youth and survivors lined up for lap number one mid-afternoon Saturday, June 4 for the official start of the 2016 Calvert County Relay for Life. For the second year in a row the huge fundraiser was held at the Calvert County Fairgrounds.
โWe are going to have a good time tonight,โ Relay master of ceremonies Nick Raines predicted as the eventโs opening ceremony got underway.
Through the generosity of 13 sponsors, 25 corporate supporters and of course the teams of participants, Calvertโs latest Relay for Life had raised over $181,000. That money goes to the American Cancer Society for research and several programs.
Those include โLook Good, Feel Better,โ which aids women who must endure appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment; Hope Lodge, a comfortable place for cancer patients and caregivers to focus on getting well; Road to Recovery, which provides transportation to and from treatment; and Reach to Recovery, a support group led by breast cancer survivors for anyone diagnosed with breast cancer.
Money is raised throughout the year for relay teams. According to a statement from the event leadership team, which this year was led by Amy King and Valarie Posner, the fundraising will continue after the June 4 event. Donations for the 2016 event will be accepted until Aug. 31.
In addition to the Survivorsโ Victory Lap, highlights of the 2016 Relay included the Luminaria Ceremony, live entertainment, the Miss Relay Pageant and the Fight Back Ceremony.
