Leonardtown, MD — The Leonardtown Planning and Zoning Commission has approved the exterior renovation plan for the building on a former used car lot on Washington Street. The lot was most recently used by Winegardner Motor Company and before that for many years by Bell Motor Company.

The property is now owned by Raynor Blair. He recently received approval from the commission for the first phase of his redevelopment of the property – a stand-alone building for a new Dunkin’ Donuts. The proposal presented to the commission at its Oct. 18 meeting was for the second phase – the old building on the property.

According to Town Manager Laschelle McKay, the plan calls for removal of the front 18 feet of the building. The rest of the building will be remodeled. The interior will be renovated, according to McKay, for a restaurant and insurance office. She said that the interior part of the plan will come back to the commission for approval.

Blair showed the commission an artist’s rendering of the new façade. “I hope you like it. I think it really is going to pop as you come into town,” he said. The planners seemed impressed. “A good pop,” said member Jack Candela, who chaired the meeting.

The town has issued a building permit for the Dunkin’ Donuts, to include a bicycle rack as requested by the commission. Now Blair has in hand unanimous approval for the old building’s exterior renovation.

At the Oct. 19 meeting the planners also unanimously recommended approval to the town council of the final site plan for the MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital Quad House, which will be used to house visiting physicians. A sidewalk to connect to Clark’s Rest was added at the request of the commisison..
