As the winter weather continues, citizens are encouraged to prepare for all weather conditions, including wind advisories and warnings. A wind advisory means that there are sustained winds from 31 to 39 mph for at least an hour, or any gusts from 46 to 57 mph.ย
The Department of Emergency Services encourages residents to take these minor precautionary measures while the advisory is in effect:
โข Be cautious while driving high-profile vehicles.
โข Secure all outdoor objects that may blow away, including outdoor furniture.
โข Tune in to radio or television news for the latest weather information.
Should the wind advisory becomes a high wind warning, citizens are advised to stay indoors to avoid hazardous situations on roads and around buildings, telephone poles, and trees. A high wind warning means that there are sustained winds from 40 to 73 mph for at least an hour, or gusts of 58 mph or higher. When under a high wind warning, be sure to:
โข Secure or move indoors any lightweight items.
โข Avoid staying in light or poorly constructed structures that may blow down or collapse.ย
โข Stay away from fallen power lines.
