The Maryland State Highway Administration is moving forward with the preliminary design process to replace the existing bridge on Route MD 254 (Cobb Island Road) over Neale Sound. Residents are encouraged to participate in one of two opportunities to review the Cobb Island Bridge proposed design, Wednesday, Jan. 6 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 9 from 9-11 a.m., at the Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department (17069 Cobb Island Road, Cobb Island).
โThis is a rare opportunity for the public to vote on the layout of the new bridge. There will be four options to choose from. I encourage everyone who lives in the Cobb Neck region to take advantage of playing a role in what the entrance to Cobb Island will look like for the next several decades. Thanks to the State Highway Administration for working with us to permit this special election,โ said Commissioner Vice President Ken Robinson (District 1).ย
The current bridge, originally constructed in 1963, is safe for the traveling public, but is nearing its useful service life. A new bridge is essential as the current bridge serves as the only route to the island. The project is funded for construction under Governor Larry Hoganโs Investment in Highways and Bridges program.
