Prior to the start of his trial on Wednesday, Kevin Dewight Honesty, 40, of Lanham, pleaded guilty to the Aug. 9, 2002 armed robbery of the SunTrust Bank on Prosperity Drive in Silver Spring, in which he made out with $55,275.
He was sentenced to 25 years in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release. District Judge Benson E. Legg also ordered that Honesty pay restitution of $55,275.
Honesty pleaded guilty to counts 2 and 3 of the indictment, which charged him with bank robbery and using a firearm during a crime of violence.
Honesty admitted in court Wednesday that three men, wearing masks and armed with handguns, entered the bank and forced bank employees at gunpoint to provide access to the teller and vault areas.
One robber in the process of attempting to vault the protective glass of the teller counter, left behind a hat. Forensic testing on the hat provided a DNA link with Kevin Honesty.
Additional investigation linked Honesty to other robberies and a search of his home resulted in the seizure of bank proceeds, three firearms, masks and other items commonly used to commit bank robberies.
U.S. Attorney Rod Rosenstein thanked the FBI and the Montgomery County and Anne Arundel County Police Departmentsย for their investigative work, and commended Assistant U.S. Attorneys James G. Warwick and Harry M. Gruber, who prosecuted the case.
