On June 12 at about 8:47 p.m., Calvert Countyย Dep. A. Clas was attempting a traffic stop on a Kawasaki motorcycle in the area of White Sands Drive and Md. Rt. 4 in Lusby.ย
The driver accelerated at a high rate of speed onto northbound Md. Rt. 4.ย The Kawasaki was observed passing vehicles on the right and forcing vehicles off the roadway through the Port Republic and St. Leonard areas.ย The Kawasaki entered the crossover at Sixes Road and continued northbound in the southbound lanes of Route 4 and narrowly missed striking several vehicles head-on.ย Cpl. V. Bortchevsky advised units to shut down Md. Rt. 4 southbound in Prince Frederick and assisted Clas in following parallel in the northbound lanes to the Kawasaki who was still traveling north in the southbound lanes.ย Assisting deputies activated emergency equipment and forced the Kawasaki to the shoulder area near Kenmar Liquors.ย
The driver attempted to go around the deputies by going into the grassy area, causing the motorcycle to slide.ย The driver was ejected and taken into custody without injuries.ย
The driver was identified as Douglas Dupree Peeples, 25 of Hyattsville.ย Peeples refused medical treatment.ย
He was arrested and charged with reckless driving, negligent driving, and fleeing and eluding as well as several other traffic offenses.
