On Sunday, July 19th, twelve scouts from troop #1634 installed ten tons of concrete rubble into the St. Mary’s River oyster sanctuary. As part of Alec Vanderborght’s eagle scout project, donated concrete was used to build a new three dimensional mound for the St. Mary’s Oyster Reef project. Concrete was donated by Patrick Guy, labor was provided by his fellow scouts, and Alec raised funds to hire Captain Craig with his barge Whiskers.
“With all the pollution entering the Bay, Alec wanted to use his project as an opportunity to give back to the community,” said his father, Hank Vanderborght. “We know that this project will make a difference and are so happy to be a part of it.”
This mound is the 36th built since the Reef Project started in 2012. Over time the reef will become colonized by wild oysters.
