Maryland Senator Roy Dyson (D: 29) wonโt know until the polls close on Tuesday who his opponent will be in the November election. But the five-term Democratic state senator has his office in Great Mills up and running for his bid for a sixth term. The office was officially launched Saturday next to the house where he grew up and now lives.
Dysonโs political career has spanned 40 years. He was first elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1973 and served there until 1981 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives (1981 to 1991). After being defeated he took some time off and then ran and was elected to the Maryland Senate in 1993.
Standing before well-wishers, Dyson said, โGod has been good to us. He has given us this beautiful day and he has given me you.โ
A Roy Dyson political event is always an informal one, with a lot of good-natured bantering and everybody on a first-name basis. Rev. Joseph Calis, pastor of Holy Face Church across the street from the office, was often the center of that good-natured give and take.
Rev. Calis said he wanted to be at the event to show his support for Sen. Dyson, who has always supported church issues, including on the churchโs abortion issue.
Dyson also listed a number of legislative accomplishments, including changing from three to 10 days the time for donated prescriptions that can be given by volunteer dentists, which was requested by Mission of Mercy.
Dyson said, โYou are my bosses,โ noting that he goes back and forth to Annapolis every day so he can stay in touch with his constituents.
During the event the four Democrats who hope to make up the District 29 delegation for the next four years posed for a picture; the incumbents Sen. Dyson and his brother-in-law Del. John Bohanan and delegate challengers Dan Slade and Len Zuza.
ย
Dyson gave special thanks to his support staff: Office Manager Barbie Shields; Debbie Romanowski, who handles scholarships; and his long-time treasurer Linda Vallandingham.
Dysonโs challenger in November will be one of the three candidates on Tuesdayโs GOP ballot: Larry Jarboe, Cindy Jones or Steve Waugh.
