La Plata, MD – An early morning fire at a Charles County apartment building is being blamed on a lightning strike, state authorities reported.

According to the Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office, the blaze was reported Monday, May 2 around 1:33 a.m. at a four-story apartment building on Edelen Station Road in La Plata. Forty firefighters were dispatched to the one-alarm fire. No injuries were reported.

โ€œDuring a storm, lightning hit the roof of the building, causing the fire,โ€ a deputy fire marshalโ€™s report stated. โ€œThe fire was contained to the attic area above Apartment 401. Occupants of three apartments were displaced due to the fire and water damage.โ€

Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $200,000.
