La Plata, MD – An early morning fire at a Charles County apartment building is being blamed on a lightning strike, state authorities reported.
According to the Maryland State Fire Marshalโs Office, the blaze was reported Monday, May 2 around 1:33 a.m. at a four-story apartment building on Edelen Station Road in La Plata. Forty firefighters were dispatched to the one-alarm fire. No injuries were reported.
โDuring a storm, lightning hit the roof of the building, causing the fire,โ a deputy fire marshalโs report stated. โThe fire was contained to the attic area above Apartment 401. Occupants of three apartments were displaced due to the fire and water damage.โ
Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $200,000.
