Prince Frederick, MD – Onย Wednesday, Sept. 26, the Calvert County Sheriffโ€™s Office, Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse (CAASA), Maryland State Police, Chesapeake Region Safety Council, and other volunteer emergency responders organized a mock crash at Calvert High School to educate students on safe driving habits.

The scenario portrayed a tow truck driver securing a broken down vehicle on the side of the road who was struck by a car with a teenage driver and two teenage passengers โ€” played by students in Calvert High Schoolโ€™s Criminal Justice Program. The at-fault driver failed to โ€œmove overโ€ while using their phone as they drove. The vehicle struck and killed the tow truck driver and then came to a stop after hitting an electrical pole. In the scenario the two passengers in the car were taken, by ambulance, to be flown to a trauma center. The driver and a distressed party related to one of those injured who was impeding on the scene of the accident were arrested. The coroner was also called to take the deceased tow truck driver up to Baltimore for an autopsy.

Sheriff Mike Evans was also present at the event. In a press release leading up to the mock crash, Sheriff Evans stated that โ€œWe continue to take steps to reduce the accident numbers, but we need to continue to do more.โ€ He also expressed the need to educate youth as a means of preventing traffic accidents.
