John "Skillet" Ulmschneider
Timonium, MD – A St. Mary’s County resident who was shot to death last April while on an emergency service call in Prince George’s County, will be honored later this spring during an annual ceremony. According to a press advisory, Firefighter/Paramedic Lt. John “Skillet” Ulmschneider of the Prince George’s County Fire Department will be the honoree at the 32nd annual Fallen Heroes Day ceremony Friday afternoon, May 5 at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium.

On April 15, 2016, Ulmschneider and another medic responded to a welfare call at a residence in Temple Hills. The resident was suspected to be suffering from a medical emergency. Ulmschneider and the other medic had to forcibly enter the home when there was no answer at the door. The home’s occupant then shot the two medics. Ulmschneider died later that night.

“Our hearts go out to the Ulmschneider family as we remember Firefighter/Paramedic Lt. John Ulmschneider and those public servants across the nation who have died in the line of duty,” Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens Chairman John O. Mitchell III stated in a press release. “Fallen Heroes Day provides an opportunity for the citizens of Maryland to take time to show appreciation and respect for the men and women who risk their lives each day when they report to work.”

Ulmscheider’s family will be presented with a replica of the Fallen Heroes Memorial and a Maryland General Assembly resolution. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, who attended Ulmschneider’s funeral in Hollywood last April, has issued a proclamation declaring May 5, 2017 as Fallen Heroes Day in Maryland. That day flags will fly at half-staff at the State House in Annapolis and all state facilities.
