On Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Chopticon High School a taller and very physical Thomas Stone Lady Cougars team battled the Lady Braves as Chopticon pulled out their third straight victory 48-42. The Braves (8-4 overall) jumped out to a 14-2 lead to end the first quarter and led 27-16 at halftime.
Thomas Stone (5-6 overall), led by point guard Thomasina Lyles (9 points 9 assists) and Kaiya Elliott (14 points) fought back to tie the score at 36 with 4:55 left in the game. The Lady Braves took over from there as Abreeleen Brown worked hard under the boards and scored 15 points. Kirsten Norris was named Papa John’s Player of the Game for her smothering defense and 16 points.

Elsewhere in the Southern Maryland Athletic Confrence, the Calvert Girls (10-2 overall) have won five straight including a 106-26 win over LaPlata on Jan. 5. Last night, Jan. 19 the lady Cavs knocked off North Point 66-56 behind Alexis Smith’s 27 points and Tiara Lester’s 25 points. Miesha Adams led North Point with 27 points and 14 rebounds.
The Westlake girls (10-2 overall) have won four straight games including last night’s 66-23 win against Great Mills. Porsha Barr led the lady Wolverines with 20 points and Shelby Key added 12 points.

The SMAC boys are led by one of the hottest teams in Maryland with North Point starting their season at 13-0 after a 81-64 win against Calvert. Devonte Thomas led all scorers with 34 points, Gerel Simmons had 18 points and Marquis Wright added 15 points for the Eagles. C.J. Cannon unloaded 25 points for Calvert and Jaylen Scayles had 13 points in the losing effort.
The McDonough Rams have won their last seven games after losing the first five games of the season. Last night, they beat Patuxent 50-41 as Devante Gray dropped in 17 points and Pablo Gary had 14 points for McDonough.Patuxent was led by John Clyburn’s 14 points and Brandon Durbin added 10 points. After starting the season at 9-1 Northern has lost their last two games including last night’s game at LaPlata (8-5 overall) 57-56. Northern’s balanced attack was led by Aaron Young’s 11 points and LaPlata was led by Royce Hunsberger’s 17 points. The Great Mills Hornets have won their last two games and now sit at 6-6 overall in the conference.
