Both St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s (SMCM) coed and women’s sailing teams are now in first place in the national rankings published by Sailing World magazine.
“Our victory at Brown last weekend proved our worthiness in the ranking,” said Adam Werblow, coach of the Seahawk sailing teams. While it is really nice that Sailing World recognizes the Seahawks as the number one ranked team in both coed and women’s only competition at this time, I feel certain our competitors will not let us pass at a single mark rounding, have a little more space on the starting line, or give us one inch anywhere on the race course. We will continue to help one another to improve each day and continue to have fun playing in boats, hoping that that formula will keep us pointed in the right direction.”
Maggie O’Brien, SMCM president added, “All winter long we watch the varsity sailing team train on the cold river. The team’s dedication and talent has paid off and they proved it in last weekend’s race in the cold and rain. The entire faculty, staff and student body congratulate the team.”
St. Mary’s College has a long history of sailing championships. In 2004, the College won the annual Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA)/Layline North American Team Race Championship. Since 1991 the college has won 10 national sailing championships and produced more than 100 ICSA All-American sailors.
