Hughesville, MD —ย  Theย Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative wants to help fight opioid addiction in Southern Maryland.

Each year SMECO raises money for a different local charity. For 2020, SMECO plans to focus on organizations fighting the opioid epidemic in Southern Maryland.

Local non-profit organizations are invited to apply for consideration to be selected as the SMECO Foundationโ€™s 2020 corporate charity. To be considered, organizations must be located in SMECOโ€™s service area and working to address the opioid epidemic through education, prevention, or treatment. Organizations must be a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and located in the area served by SMECO. The cooperative provides electric service to all of Charles and St. Maryโ€™s counties, all but the northern tip of Calvert County, and the southern portion of Prince Georgeโ€™s County.


Applications must include the following:

  • Contact information
  • Website for organization
  • IRS Tax exemption notification
  • Most recent annual report
  • Total revenue and expense budget
  • List of organizationโ€™s governing board and staff
  • Description of how the funds will be used
