SOMD — When it comes to the percentage of the population vaccinated against COVID-19, SOMD and the DC area lag behind the rest ofย  Maryland. As of January 1, the latest numbers from the state’s vaccination dashboard show local residents with lower vaccination rates than the rest of the state. Though the numbers have improved from earlier in the week when numbers were less than half that of Eastern Shore and Baltimore area and just above half of Western Maryland.ย 

The state is still in phase 1A of the vaccination plan, so the vaccine is only administered to first responders, healthcare workers, and residents of long-term care facilities. Overall, even the place with the highest rate of vaccination has a rate of just over 1%

State numbers divide Maryland up into five districts. Charles County is included with the Capital Region and not SOMD in their data. Let’s look at the vaccination rate:

Southern Maryland

Includes Calvert and St. Mary’s Counties

National Capital Region

Includes Charles, Frederick, Montgomery, and Prince George’s County

Number vaccinated 9,352

Percentage of the population 0.39%

Baltimore Metropolitan Area

Includesย Anne Arundel, Baltimore City, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, and Howard Counties

Number vaccinated: 25,948

Percentage of populationย  0.94%

Eastern Shore

Includes Caroline, Cecil, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties

Number vaccinatedย 5,149

Percentage of population 1.13%

Western Maryland
