Prince Frederick, MD – A Calvert County man who has been charged with stabbing his father during a reported domestic argument is tentatively scheduled to appear in District Court for a competency hearing. Timothy James Barton, 27 of Lusby, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault in connection with a Jan. 17 incident that occurred at a residence on Antelope Trail in Lusby. The victim—identified as Joseph Barton Sr., 53 of Lusby. The younger Barton’s next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday afternoon, Jan. 25. He is currently being held without bond.

According to the statement of probable cause submitted by Detective Wayne Wells, on Jan. 17 at 11:22 a.m. the Calvert Control Center received a 911 call regarding a stabbing. Joseph Barton was in the foyer of a residence and other residents were rendering aid while receiving medical instructions from dispatchers. “Joseph Barton received a stab wound to his back and numerous lacerations to both of his hands,” Wells stated. “Joseph Barton was airlifted by Maryland State Police Trooper 2 to Prince George’s Shock Trauma unit from Calvert Medical Health Center [CMHC] in critical condition.” According to the statement of probable cause, the elder Barton sustained a collapsed lung and internal injuries.

Wells stated in court documents that Timothy Barton was found walking in the street near the house. He had sustained lacerations to his right hand. He was subsequently taken to CMHC to be treated for minor injuries. Timothy Barton was taken into custody by police without a struggle. “While being placed in custody Timothy Barton advised deputies that he was responsible for the stabbing and also advised that the knife used was located at the top of Antelope Trail at the intersection,” Wells stated. “The knife was located blood-soaked and later collected by crime scene technicians.”
The police investigation “revealed that Timothy and Joseph Barton were involved in a physical altercation at their residence,” Wells stated. “During that altercation at some point Timothy produced a knife and stabbed Joseph. While getting away from Timothy, Joseph received numerous lacerations [defensive wounds] and ran next door for help.”

In addition to the competency hearing, a preliminary hearing on the charges Barton is facing is tentatively scheduled for Feb. 16.
