During a brief visit to St. Mary’s County last week, State Superintendent of Schools Nancy Grasmick took some time to stop by the class of Stephanie Fick. Flick is a kindergarten teacher at Benjamin Banneker in Loveville, and 2006-2007 Teacher of the Year.
Congressman Steny Hoyer, Delegate Bohanan, and Superintendent Martirano were also present for the surprise classroom visit, during which Delegate Johnny Wood presented Ms. Flick with a certificate from the Southern Maryland Delegation.
The young students do understand the honor their teacher has won, assured Flick, when they didn’t respond to Wood’s enquiry about the award. “They’re a little shocked,” explained Flick. The class was engrossed in learning about weather when their unexpected guests arrived. Earlier last week, however, the kindergarteners had thrown their own surprise party for their teacher, and presented her with a sash saying “Our Teacher of the Year.”
