SILVER SPRING, Md. — Today, Maryland gubernatorial candidate Tom Perez received the endorsement of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. A Baltimore native, Speaker Pelosi was elected the first woman Speaker of the House in 2007.

In her endorsement, Speaker Pelosi cited her long history of working alongside Perez to deliver justice for the American people, as well as Perezโ€™s commitment to creating a progressive future.

ย

โ€œI worked closely with Tom when he led President Obamaโ€™s Labor Department, the Justice Departmentโ€™s Civil Rights Division and the Democratic National Committee, so trust me when I say that he will be the leader Maryland needs to push for progressive change and deliver. Tom is a compassionate leader, a great listener, and someone who isnโ€™t afraid to do the hard work governing requires, and Iโ€™m proud to endorse him,โ€ said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

โ€œSpeaker Pelosi is a transformational leader who has spent her entire career in fierce pursuit of justice for Americaโ€™s children and families,โ€ said Tom Perez. โ€œShe has been on the frontlines to defend our democracy, and Iโ€™m so thankful for her leadership here in Maryland, across our country, and around the world. I could not be more proud to receive her endorsement.โ€

Speaker Pelosi grew up in Baltimoreโ€™s Little Italy neighborhood and comes from a long line of Baltimore public servants. Her father, Thomas Dโ€™Alesandro Jr., represented Marylandโ€™s 3rd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives and later served as the Mayor of Baltimore. Her brother, Thomas D’Alesandro III, also served as the Mayor of Baltimore.
