Spiggy and Friends hosted a charity golf tournament at the Chesapeake Hills Golf Club in Lusby on Friday, Oct. 3, at 9 a.m. Nearly 40 teams, each paying $500 for a foursome, signed up to play in a spirited, fun-packed contest.
ย On Sunday, Oct. 5, after the tournament, Spiggy and Friends entertained everyone at the American Legion Post 274 in Lusby, where the crowd watched the Redskins spank the Philadelphia Eagles on national television.
ย โThis was the best ‘Spiggy & Friends’ Benefit yet!โ said Dave โSpiggyโ Spigler.ย โThis was my sixteenth year of raising funds for needy children in the DC metro area as well as here in Calvert County.โ
ย Spiggy stated that almost 400 people showed up this year to watch the Redskins beat the Eagles on a 6-foot screen and several large flat screens at the American Legion Post.
โThe crowd was so large, it overflowed into a tailgate set up in the parking lot with additional TVs and tents full of Redskin apparel and merchandise,โ said an enthusiastic Spiggy. โThis year, we were joined by four beautiful Washington Redskins Cheerleaders, as well as ‘Princess Gloria,’ the Hogettes, little ‘Matt,’ our Honorary Hogette for the Day, and former Redskins stars punter, Mike Bragg, and punt returner, Mike Nelms!โ
ย At half time, the audience was treated to a special speaker, Dayton Weber, 10, a young man who lost both hands and feet to a staph infection when he was very young.ย Dayton proudly stood before the audience and spoke of his illness and thanked everyone for the financial support during his recovery.
ย โWe also had Hunter Scott and his family; Hunter is a five-year-old from Lusby who has recently undergone two surgeries to remove a brain tumor at Children’s Hospital and is making great progress,โ said Spiggy.
ย โFinally, our Calvert County State’s Attorney made an appeal to support the little seven-year-old girl who recently escaped her abusive adoptive mother,โ said Spiggy.
ย The stateโs attorney was referring to the case where authorities found the remains of two other children in a freezer in the home of an abused girl. โThis child is being taken care of by the County at this time, but will require a lot of support in the coming months.โ
ย To help out, the Hogettes kicked off the fund drive by placing $500 in a jar that was passed among the attendees. โIncredibly, we raised $2,000 in just 20 minutes,โ beamed Spiggy. โI am proud of the way the people of Calvert responded and it just shows the goodness of people here.ย We need these โfeel goodโ stories to offset the negative news that has emanated from Lusby the last two weeks.โ
ย โThe best thing of all is that we grossed more than $50,000 from our Spiggy and Friends Golf Tournament,โ said Spiggy. He reiterated that this was a great example of the goodness and giving spirit of people.
