On Thursday, April 8, firefighters from Hollywood and Bay District responded to a report of heavy black smoke behind a residence on St. Andrews Church Road at about 6 p.m.
When crews arrived they discovered that the landfill had ignited in the area of a mulch pile which in turn involved some PVC piping.
Crews had to cut their way through a locked gate to approach the fire. When they made it inside the complex, they got to work quickly and had the fire under control within a few minutes. Mop up and spot clean up continued for about 30 minutes after gaining control of the fire.
No injuries were reported.
The fire remains under investigation.
