An accidental fire Thursday afternoon in St. Leonard caused extensive damage to a single-family house. The fire was discovered by one of the occupants of the home on Timber View Lane. A neighbor, who also noticed the fire, entered the home and helped one of the occupants get out of the house to safety. There were no injuries as a result of the fire which was reported at 4:09 p.m.

It took 40 firefighters from St. Leonard, Prince Frederick, Solomons andย Huntingtown volunteer fire departments 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

According to the Maryland State Fire Marshallโ€™s Office, the fire was determined to be accidental due to improperly discarded smoking materials on the deck of the home. The office reports that a smoke alarm was present and activated properly. Loss was estimated at $150,000 to the structure and $50,000 to the contents.
