An accidental fire Thursday afternoon in St. Leonard caused extensive damage to a single-family house. The fire was discovered by one of the occupants of the home on Timber View Lane. A neighbor, who also noticed the fire, entered the home and helped one of the occupants get out of the house to safety. There were no injuries as a result of the fire which was reported at 4:09 p.m.
It took 40 firefighters from St. Leonard, Prince Frederick, Solomons andย Huntingtown volunteer fire departments 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
According to the Maryland State Fire Marshallโs Office, the fire was determined to be accidental due to improperly discarded smoking materials on the deck of the home. The office reports that a smoke alarm was present and activated properly. Loss was estimated at $150,000 to the structure and $50,000 to the contents.
