If you like to shop, do it with a purpose!  Check out the many goodies at Spot, the Stop Pet Overpopulation Thrift shop run by Southern Maryland Spay and Neuter Inc to finance local spay and neuter programs.

SMSN is a 501k charity that runs the thrift shop, Ellen McCormack, organization president and Spot manager, explained.  “We do have overhead: rent, utilities, things like that, but all of the store’s profits go to local spay and neuter programs.” 
 
Grants have been given to Bunny Magic Rescue, Calvert Animal Welfare League, Friends of Felines Inc., Humane Society of Calvert County, Chesapeake SPCA, Days End Horse Rescue, Freedom Hill Horse Rescue, Annapolis SPCA and Second Hope Rescue.

Thrift store shoppers will find all sorts of great stuff on Spot’s shelves at 4860 St. Leonard Road in Saint Leonard.  “Our most popular items are clothing and then furniture,” McCormack said, adding Spot’s overall inventory includes men’s, women’s and children’s clothing and shoes (there’s a whole basement full); accessories such as jewelry, purses, scarves, belts, and ties; toys and games; books and videos; house wares and linens; and electronics.  “We also get antiques and collectibles, everything you can imagine,” McCormack said.

Store hours are Wednesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.  Customers should visit often.  “It’s amazing; things change daily,” McCormack said.  “If they stay too long, we mark them way down.”

Donations can be made Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 a.m.  The store can not accept mattresses, large appliances, computers, and car seats, stained or broken items.

SMSN is dedicated to sponsoring low-cost spay and neuter programs to end the euthanasia of all healthy animal companions.  In addition to funding spay and neuter providers, the organization provides free spay and neuter services to Calvert County residents.
