At 3:37 p.m.Oct. 24, Charles County Sheriffโ€™s officers responded to Smallwood Drive and Stone Avenue in Waldorf for the report of a bus crash.

Investigation revealed a Childtime Learning Center bus driven by Angela Renee Carey, 39, of California, was on Stone Avenue attempting to cross Smallwood Drive when it failed to yield the right of way to a Ford Ranger traveling east on Smallwood Drive.

The Ranger, driven by James Grimes, 36, of Waldorf, struck the bus, which overturned onto its driverโ€™s side.

The bus was transporting four children between 6 and 8 years of age. A 6-year-old child was flown by a Maryland State Police helicopter to Childrenโ€™s National Medical Center in Washington.

Grimes was flown by the same Maryland State Police helicopter to Washington Hospital Centerโ€™s MedStar Unit.

They both had non-life-threatening injuries and were released from the hospital the following day.

Carey and the three other children were transported by ambulance to Civista Medical Center with minor injuries.

The occupants of both vehicles were restrained by seatbelts.

The preliminary cause of the crash appears to be driver error. Officer R. Williams of the Traffic Operations Unit is investigating.
