LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The beautiful weather seems to have drawn all residents to theย 70th St. Maryโs County Fair this past weekend. Parents and children could be seen snacking on fair food as they wandered from exhibit to exhibit.
With a variety of rides that could toss, throw, spin and whirl riders around, there was plenty to keep event goers busy and entertained.ย
Thursday was deemed โOpening Day,โ and event goers could view 4-H exhibits featuring photography and livestock. The Barnyard Runners Pig Races was hosted prior to the official opening at 7 p.m. The Spring Ridge Middle School Chorus opening the event with a rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, and Cub Scout Pack #1203 provided the color guard.
With a warm welcome from John Richards, president of the St. Maryโs County Fair Association, he crowned the 2016 Queen of Tolerance. Other activities include Rick Pratt using a chainsaw and pieces of logs to create artwork.
Children swarmed the rides and exhibits on Friday, or โSchool Day.” They entered the fairgrounds for free, and all rides were one ticket instead of up to five tickets. Other events on Friday includes a Southern Maryland Robotics Competition, a cake decorating contest, a St. Maryโs County Sheriffโs Office K9 demonstration, a Suttler Post Farm Clydesdales demonstration. Rollo the Stilt Walker was seen wandering the fairgrounds, and Pat Fulch gave blacksmithing demonstrations throughout the day.
Parade Day on Saturday proved to be a busy day of more exhibits and demonstrations. Things to enjoy that day included Super Magic Man Illusions, David Dent hosting Stuffed Ham demonstrations, and an Interlocking Building Bridge contest. There was also a jousting tournament and an Open Class livestock show for event goers to experience.
Sunday was a day for the family at the fair, and included activities such as watching the Daughters of Veda, The Southern Maryland Sound Barbershop chorus, as well as the Southern Maryland Consolidated Choir and Southern Maryland Jazz Orchestra. The St. Peterโs Claver Gospel Choir and New Brisoe brothers wrapped up the evening. If event goers were interested in purchasing a Rick Pratt piece of artwork, an auction was hosted later in the evening.
