With snow emergenciy plans in effectย in Calvert and St. Mary’s, the Md. State Highway Administration has been busy clearing roadways since the storms began. At 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 26, SHA reported 171 pieces of equipment were in service in Southern Md.
Sunday evening the SHA Shops in Leonardtown, Prince Frederick and LaPlata were reporting snow with air and pavement temperatures in the mid to upper 20’s.ย SHA’s District Community Liaison Bob Rager told TheBAYNET.com Sunday night, “SHA will continue to plow and salt in southern Maryland throughout the night and tomorrow. We’ll be out there as long as it takes to clear state roads.”
“As always, we encourage everyone to avoid non-essential travel.ย The more room our plow and salt truck drivers have, the faster and safer they can clear the roads for everyone,” Rager stated.ย He also urgedย added cautionย for drivers, saying, “It’s worth noting that strong winds are forecast with this storm and this is one more reason to avoid driving if at all possible. Blowing snow can create visibility issues for all drivers, and strong winds coupled with slippery road conditions can make driving substantially more difficult for drivers of high profile vehicles.”
While the forecasts call for the snow to stop on Monday, temperatures are predicted to stay below freezing, with strong northwest windsย and gusts of up to 45 m.p.h.
As SHA works to clear roadways, TheBAYNET.com will be working toย bring you up-to-the-minute informationย on all conditions, closings and cancellations affecting Southern Md.
