Lexington Park, MD – State authorities reported a student at a St. Mary’s County school faces charges for allegedly starting a fire in a bathroom. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the incident occurred Tuesday, March 15 around 1:30 p.m. at Esperanza Middle School on Maple Road in Lexington Park.
“The fire was the result of a student holding an open flame to combustible materials, causing it to ignite,” a fire marshal’s report stated. “The small incendiary fire was discovered in a restroom of the school and was quickly extinguished by staff.”
The student was only identified by authorities as a male juvenile. No injuries were reported. Damage was estimated at $50.
Neither the building’s smoke alarm nor the sprinkler system was activated and no fire department personnel were dispatched.
