Lexington Park, MD – State authorities reported a student at a St. Maryโ€™s County school faces charges for allegedly starting a fire in a bathroom. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office, the incident occurred Tuesday, March 15 around 1:30 p.m. at Esperanza Middle School on Maple Road in Lexington Park.

โ€œThe fire was the result of a student holding an open flame to combustible materials, causing it to ignite,โ€ a fire marshalโ€™s report stated. โ€œThe small incendiary fire was discovered in a restroom of the school and was quickly extinguished by staff.โ€

The student was only identified by authorities as a male juvenile. No injuries were reported. Damage was estimated at $50.

Neither the buildingโ€™s smoke alarm nor the sprinkler system was activated and no fire department personnel were dispatched.
