Fridayโ€™s rain created a soggy course but Saturday morning, Dec. 7 hordes of runners and walkers were ready to roll. And roll they did at the annual Solomons Island Jingle Bell Run (JBR) for Arthritis. The 5 kilometer (K) started and ended at the Holiday Inn Conference Center and Marina. The race attracted over 950 participants to its main event and several dozen small children to its famed preliminary, the Rudolph Romp.

First across the line in the 5K was Jesse Stump, 31, who completed the trek in 16 minutes and 19 seconds. Close behind were Trent Herzog, 16 of Lusby, who logged in a time of 16 minutes and 40 seconds; and David Raley, 30 of Lexington Park, whose time was 16 minutes and 48 seconds. Hayley Jackson, 14 of Lusby, was the top female finisher, with a time of 18 minutes and 44 seconds.

There were nearly 60 teams of participants registered for the 2013 JBR. Team names included โ€œThe Tacky Teachers,โ€ โ€œWill Jog for Eggnog,โ€ โ€œThe Angry Elvesโ€ and โ€œJingle This.โ€

The huge field put a large jingle in the pockets of the Arthritis Foundation, too. The 2013 event exceeded its lofty goal of raising $40,000 to fight arthritis.

The race attracted participants from all three Southern Maryland counties and other Free State communities, as well as Virginia, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Washington State.

Complete results of JBR 2013 are posted on the Chesapeake Bay Running Club web site at www.cbrcmd.org.
