Leonardtown, MD – Students from Charles, St. Maryโs and Calvert counties competed in multiple categories to win gold, silver and bronze awards Saturday February 6. The ceremony took place at the Forrest Technology Center in Leonardtown.
With categories such as carpentry, welding, nursing, culinary arts and cinema, many students earned awards that will take them to the state competition which takes place April 15-16.
This competition was created to help students in Southern Maryland get prepped for college and trades in the real world after graduating high school. It was important to both parents, students and teachers alike as these awards help further the studentโs skills and ability to achieve jobs in their preferred fields.
It was an exciting and competitive operation where the students had a set amount of time to create whatever they were making (being it electrical or hair styles) to be the best. Skills USA (http://www.skillsusa.org/) created and supported the event with a silent auction where the proceeds go to help get the winning students to the state championship. Local businesses donated in helping do so.
Mike Egan, the principal of the tech center announced the winners alongside Maggie Giles, the assistant principal, during a 2:30 p.m. ceremony. The winners received medals, a certificate and in some categories, prizes. All the participants received certificates as well.
