Hagerstown, MD – A Maryland teen is facing felony charges after purposefully setting his house on fire. While committing the act of arson, the boy used a cell phone to record himself as his bedroom went up in flames.

The fire occurred at his family home, located in Hagerstown, MD. Although there were no injuries, his actions caused significant damage to his bedroom where the fire originated.

The boy told investigators that he poured a container of rubbing alcohol onto his dresser. Once the dresser was covered in the flammable substance, he then set it ablaze.

With a swift hand motion, he swiped the flaming liquid onto his bed, where the fire spread even further. Investigators say that the boy then fled his home and dropped the cell phone containing the footage of the incident in the process.

CBS News reports that the boy was only 15 years old. The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office has investigated the crime and determined that the act was intentional.

The boy has been charged with first-degree malicious destruction of property, incurring an estimated $5,000 in damages. However, because of his age, he is being charged as a juvenile.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, Jan. 13. Sadly, this is just one of several house fires making Maryland headlines in under a week. WUSA9.com reported on a house fire in Columbia, MD, that sent two people to the hospital earlier this week.

The two-story home was engulfed in flames, but firefighters were able to rescue the family dog and escort the residents out safely.

The occurrences of house fires are too common and leave irreparable damage for homeowners. A trend in home fire safety is to install metal roofs; they are resistant to flames and last up to 50 years with proper maintenance.

As the week continues on, more home fires are reported in the news. Some, unfortunately, have more devastating results than others.

The most recent incident of house fire happened in Elkton, MD, on Friday, Jan. 15. State Fire Marshals say a man was found dead in a second floor bedroom as the flames climbed up the walls of the home.

The rapid spread of flames forced firefighters out of the home before they could pull the man to safety.

The cause of the fire in Elkton is still under investigation.
